synoposis of Whiskers and Lies

Baker Georgia Tepper has been hired to provide spooky cupcakes for the Reading Buddies Halloween Party at the library. She and Kathleen are meeting to finalize the menu of festive confections. Unfortunately, once Georgia’s former mother-in-law ambushes her at the library and threatens Georgia with legal action, the fun is soured.

Later, Georgia’s litigious in-law is found dead and the friendly baker is implicated. Kathleen is eager to help prove her innocence. Luckily, Kathleen and her intrepid magical cats, Hercules and Owen, have solved their fair share of mysteries. As a result, she knows that in life as well as crime solving, it is all relative. So with hard work, she can make sure the right criminal is booked.

Whiskers and Lies by Sofie Kelly book review

Overall, I chose to rate this book as a 4\5 stars!

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Whiskers and Lies is a part of the Magical Cats Mystery series but can defintely be read as a standalone. I picked this book out without knowing it is the 14th book on the series and had almost no issues understanding the charcters and the book itself- Yes, I had to stop every now and then to make sure I was following each character’s storyline, but no, It wasn’t a big problem for me.

This book gives off great Fall season vibes : it is set during late October as Halloween approches, and a big part of the plot is set at a cozy library where Kathleen works. I liked how the subplot focused on the arrangements for this Halloween party that happens every year at the library, meaning perfect descriptions of spooky decorations and delicious cupcakes.

Also, how can I write a cozy cat mystery book review without mentioning the two magical cats? Each with a special magical ability and a desire to solve the crime! I loved Hercules and Owen: the way they sometimes acted rudly and sometimes friendly, excactly like typical cats do.

I do wish the author would have highlighted more of the cats and their magic, which would’ve made the story even better, because after all, the cats are on the cover of the book.

Cozy cat mystery books are everything, and mystery-wise, I really enjoyed this one. I dont know if it’s because I have read too many Sherlock Holmes stories, but I did realized what happend to Georgia’s former mother-in-law earlier in the book. Still, it was fun to go alone with Kathleen on this adventure as she discovers more and more clues that lead her to the final answer.

To conclude, the author did a great job setting the mood for Autumn, making this book a perfect read during this time of year. I enjoyed following our main character, Kathleen, through the story and seeing her relationships with her friends and people in town develop.
